The 10 hour walk on the trail through the rain forest was adventure enough.

| The island with a length of 280 miles
und breadth of 60 miles is located north of Olympic
National park (Washington/USA) on Juan de Fuca
strait. It is visavis of the Canadian town
Vancouver. We have approached it with a ferry started from Port
Angeles(USA) and left it with the ferry Nanaimo-North
Vancouver. We walked a part (one fourth) of the coast trail in East
Sooke Regional park. The coast trail lies in the south part of the island, which is settled less and where nature is very pitoresc. |

| Columbia
river is the most water rich river of North America, which flows into
the Pacific ocean. It passes on the border between the states
Washington and Oregon on long passages. Mit ihm
verbunden ist die für uns sehr interessante Expedition
Lewis und Clark (1803-1806), von der wir erst während unseres
Aufenthalts in den USA erfahren hatten. Sie ist bedeutend für die
Erschliessungsgeschichte des Westens, nachdem Präsident
Jefferson von Frankreich große Gebiete abgekauft hatte und
sich damit das Territorium der USA damals verdoppelte. Wir sind an
verschiedenen Stellen dem Verlauf des Flusses bis an die Mündung
und der Expedition von Lewis und Clark gefolgt |
